That’s what we want to achieve – we want to practice being in love with life so much that it becomes our natural response. It’s exactly like practicing a dance move or swimming stroke; you know what you want to achieve and you practice until you get there and then you continue practicing in order to keep yourself in shape. That is the most important thing to note, we have to do our appreciation work because it’s fun, because we like how it feels and not because we want to get something in return. When we do the work in order to get something in return we keep looking for that thing we want to show up, and that takes us backward instead of taking us forward.
Just tell yourself that you want to look for things to appreciate and when you set that up as a goal, you will be reminded of it more often than not, and when you practice it each time you are reminded, then eventually it will become your natural response – a response that comes without your having to think about it. It’s very much like driving a car. When we first start learning we have to pay attention to dimension and speed, how soon to brake and at what pace, when to change gears – but with practice we do all these things without much deliberate thought.
