After 9 years, I'm getting my Thursday nights back!

​You might be asking yourself - what has Zehra been doing every week on Thursday nights for the past 9 years?
Well, my friends, noting nefarious I'm afraid...but you'll have to read the whole story to find out.
It began when I attended a meditation retreat in 2010 and came away feeling that if I was going to teach meditation it would be done very differently.
You see, the Law of Attraction has changed the way I look at things, and now I understand why Meditation on its own is not enough. It needs to be combined with teaching people to think differently, so that when the come out of a meditation session, they can remain steady in a higher vibrational place. There is no point to meditation if you are going to return to thinking the same ornery thoughts you were thinking before it.

​I also find that there is confusion about the nature of meditation. Most people don't really know the difference between meditation and mindfulness - trust me, there is a big difference.

In 2012, I decided that since I didn't see anything resembling what I thought should be taught in a meditation class, that I would create my own program - so I did. These classes were held at my home. Eventually, it became a pain to host them at home, so I started looking for space and approached the community centers. I was told that meditation was not popular enough for the city to devote space towards it. But I kept looking and started knocking on doors. I met the Branch Head of the Northview Branch library and pitched my idea, and he to my surprise said Yes! He was open to giving it a try. And so in Sep 2013 meditation classes at the library commenced. It has been the most consistent and most popular of the programs at the library - I am told. We have had anywhere from 2 to 40 people attending.


​After 9 years of teaching FREE, WEEKLY meditation classes, I have finally handed it over to one of my students, Rose, who I know will do an amazing job. The meditation program ran for 50 weeks each year with a break at Christmas and New Year. It was my way of giving back to the community that has been my home for the past 20 years. Many people passed through the program, some came for just one or two classes some came regularly. All who came learnt not only how to meditate but also how to change their self-talk and manage their worry and anxiety.

I am sure that I will continue teaching meditation on-line and I am in the process of figuring out what exactly that will look like. But for now I am enjoying having freed up a weekday evening that had been a standing commitment for the past 9 years. I will miss teaching meditation, but at the same time, I am excited about what I will do instead? Perhaps it's time not to do anything, but just chill...
