Under the Christmas Tree

Anyone who has a toddler will relate to the fact that going shopping with them on Christmas eve when the snow is knee deep is not exactly a fun time. My 17 year old was a toddler once, and I’m sitting here remembering Christmas many years ago, when my toddler helped me learn an important law of attraction lesson.

I had just come home after a very long day because I wanted to look after a few things knowing that I would be gone for a few days. Got home and realized that there were still a few important things that I absolutely had to get that night. I had already picked up my son from the day care so I had no choice but to bring him with me. It was something I dreaded.

Getting a toddler to put on snow pants and get bundled up adds another fifteen minutes to your trip on each end. It always takes longer to run errands with kids in tow. If it was just me, I would have zipped in and zipped out of Walmart in no time at all. But with him I would have to take his stroller and I did not relish the idea. Any way off we went.
I was hoping that everyone would be home by their fireside enjoying hot cocoa, but I was wrong. It was crowed, and there were traffic jams in the isles. I got the things I wanted and was making my way to the cash register, trying to navigate as best I could, when my toddler lunged at something and shouted at the top of his voice “MAMA”. I stopped, confused, wondering what was wrong. He was pointing at a display with ginormous Lego sets. “I want that for Christmas” he said in a loud excited voice. I suddenly felt like everyone in Walmart was looking at me. I was on stage, and everyone was evaluating how I would handle this situation. “I’ve already got your gift, haven’t you seen the big package under the tree with your name on it”. He knew what I was talking about. “But I want this one” he said, “I don’t want the other thing”. I hesitated for a moment. We love our children and “Christmas is all about making them happy. What’s the point of giving him something that won’t make him happy?” I thought. So, I stopped to see what he was pointing at. Then I chuckled – the Lego set he was pointing at was the one I had already bought for him! It was sitting under the tree beautifully wrapped waiting for him to open it.

I gave my son a big hug and said “okay, if that’s what you want, then that’s what you will get, let’s go home and pray for it”. “NO!” he started crying and throwing a tantrum as I firmly wheeled him towards the cash register. “I promise that you will have that Lego, mummy doesn’t have to get it, because mummy knows it’s already on it’s way and it will be there for you in the morning.” I hugged him tight as I carried him out of his stroller and into his car seat. I felt like the most horrible mother in the world for making him cry so much, but I knew that it was going to be okay. He would go to sleep and then in the morning he would get his gift and he would learn that everything he wants can come to him, if he allows it, and that it doesn’t always have to come through mummy.

After he went to bed, I sat there thinking. We do the same thing, don’t we?  We ask the Universe/God for something. We want it right away. We throw tantrums and worry and complain and keep asking over and over again. Yet, what we want is right there and if we would just wait, and give up the thought that says “this is the only way, this thing I want can come to me” then the Universe would be able to find a way to bring us what we want.
We have to Trust that because we have asked, what we want is on its way. We have to Trust that we are always loved and that the Universe wants us to have the things we want. Just because we’re not walking out of the store with it, doesn’t mean we won’t get it.

I use this analogy often as a reminder to myself and those I coach in practicing the Law of Attraction. I am reminded of it every year this time of the year. Wishing everyone the best of the Holiday Season.
