When something feels impossible…don’t use the Law of Attraction to fix it

Almost on a daily basis I receive emails from people who are in desperate straits and want to change their lives using the law of attraction.  They ask me to help them to figure out how to use the law of attraction to get the thing that is eluding them and making their lives miserable.  Sometimes, it’s the lack of money, sometimes it is a health problem, and sometimes it is a relationship.

What I want to say to all of them is “you’re going about it the wrong way”.

It took me a relatively long time to learn this truth – but learn it I did.  There are two things you need to understand, as I did:

  1. When you try to use the law of attraction from a place of desperation, it doesn’t work.  In fact, it can even make things worse.  This is complicated by the fact that your vibration and thought about one subject impacts all the other subjects in your life.  In my case, I was so worried about the fact that my ex-husband would take my six year old son away, that I almost lost my house.

  1. You cannot do things that go against your beliefs and get positive results.  In my case, when I started understanding the law of attraction, I became careless about my spending habits – I had started believing that money would flow in easily, but I had not given up the belief that one should not spend more than in coming in, and that you have to work hard to have money flow in.  So the knowledge of law of attraction actually gave rise to “opposing beliefs” inside me.  What I failed to recognize was that my new found beliefs based on the law of attraction were little seedlings that did not have strong roots, while my old beliefs about money were full grown trees with roots that ran deep into my psyche and controlled all my thoughts.  As a result, my actions started coming from my understanding of the law of attraction but they did not result in the things I wanted because the trees on my path were big, and I did not know how to deal with them.

Beware of opposing beliefs

I learnt my lesson the hard way, by making things worse, before I made them better.  So please, stop and listen to me.  You don’t have to learn the hard way.  In the end, I figured it out.  My ex did take my son away, and I came close to going bankrupt, but through it all I reached for one straw – that straw was the four step process that I now teach.  Step 1) is to know where you are; Step 2) is to know where you want to go, Step 3) is to reduce negative momentum by giving yourself logical arguments that establish that where you are can change for the better, Step 4) is to shift your attention to the things you can appreciate.  As a result, two things happened that changed everything for me.  My ex brought my son back to me without my taking any legal action or even talking to him about it.  And secondly, my financial situation did a 180, and within a year things turned around for me completely.

It took a lot of work – vibrational work, thinking work – all based on what I learnt from Abraham.  It is no wonder that I teach the law of attraction based solely on what I have learnt from Abraham.

Here are some guidelines which will help is a guide to what you need to do if you are in a place where something you want feels impossible, or really difficult.

  1. You can’t stop wanting what you want, but you can stop thinking about it.  Every time you find your thoughts going to the subject of the thing you want, STOP.  Remind yourself that thinking about this thing you want is going to do more damage than good.  Remind yourself that the thing that will help the most is to focus on a different thought.  You have two choices, and either one of them is fine, provided you can discipline yourself to stay with it.  1) Start repeating the words “things always work out for me – I don’t know how things will fall into place, but I am willing to trust that they will”. 2) Switch your attention to something else, something that feels better than the problem or situation that has you in its grip.  I like to focus on nature and appreciate the flowers and the trees, the birds and my pets.
  2. When you feel better talk to yourself about all the things you can appreciate about where you are in life.  Make a long gratitude list and remind yourself on a frequent daily basis about it.  If you are in a place where you can’t find anything to appreciate about your life then just continue focusing on nature, or things outside your life that you can appreciate.
  3. The important thing is to stop looking for the results you want to see – just tell yourself that they will show up in perfect timing.  When you look for results, you actually push the things you want away from you.
  4. Develop a habit of appreciating things around you and meditation, and do these just because you trust that your life will improve in many different ways because of it, and not because you want something specific to happen because of it.  The thing about appreciating and meditating is that if you do these things in order to make something happen, then you look for results, and when you look for results you push the things you want further away rather than bring them closer.  You do this by noticing that the things you want haven’t happened – when you focus on reality you perpetuate it so that the same thing shows up in your future.
  5. Start pre-paving your day when you wake up and pre-pave going to bed.
  6. Do the work not to achieve anything specific but just because you trust that when you do the work your life improves.

Remember that the law of attraction is not a law that teaches you how to get the things that you want – law of attraction is a lifestyle that leads to living a life from a place of love and peace within your heart, and a by-product of this lifestyle is that you experience ease and flow in all the things you want to achieve in life.

Remember that life is not about the things you want to get – everything that you want is because you think it will make you happy.  So the end objective is to find happiness and joy.  So why not ask the Universe and that which you call God to bring you all the things that will make you happy, and leave it at that.  Let the universe surprise and delight you.  There may be things that you might never have thought about that have the capacity to make you happy – why not leave the door of unlimited possibilities open.

Hi Zehra, I enjoy your articles and your book! :) My situation is, I am a veterinarian involved with animal welfare issues. Many veterinarians are causing unnecessary pain to animals because they refuse to see it as harmful. I am working on changing this, with some good success. But it still feels like I'm "pushing against" the problem. I just can't get my head around how to think of this situation in a reasonably LoA way. What do you think?

Hi Jean,
As long as you keep thinking that things are one way - they cannot change. You need to open the door of possibility by soothing your angst about the issue. Say things like, "I am sure there are others like me out there", "There are more animals who are alive and well and enjoying life than those who are in pain". Don't be so fixated in your opinion of others because when you judge them you are actually adding to the problem. You have to start trusting that there is a solution out there and that one day the problem will be solved, just like many other problems in the history of mankind have eventually been solved - remember slavery?
Remind yourself that it is not your job to fix the world - your job is to create your own bubble.
Remember that an animal's perception of pain and physicality is not the same as that of a human. Animals don't hang on to emotions - they let them go. Remember that animals are more connected to Source than we are and Source is responding to them all the time. Remember that animals and the love they hold for us and the world is what keeps this world in balance.Remember that animals are consciousness too and that they have the same power to create their own experience that we do as humans. They are not helpless, no one is.
Blessings,
Zehra

Thanks! You helped me focus on the *real* problem, which is my own impatience. There is a large group of us, and we have already made significant progress; I just want it all NOW! :) As you pointed out, I need to envision the end goal, and do what I'm inspired to do in the meantime, without worrying about how many cats are suffering or how so many veterinarians seem callous about it. I can't know their hearts.

Interesting point about slavery... but weren't the abolitionists angry? Lincoln created a whole *war* about it... that seems like pretty serious pushing against. Yet they accomplished their goals. Is the point that the goals can be accomplished even faster if I do my part from a non-angry place? I will go pet my cat now! :)

Hi Zehra,
I am new to your website, and going through some of your posts and the book Why Me. Regarding this article, how you used LOA to change your own life is such an inspiring story.

However, I am confused about the part where it is says not to look for results. How do we 'enjoy the process' as Abraham says if we don't see anything happen towards our goals. I like working on a skill, for instance, because I like seeing myself improve little by little, day after day. I remember Abraham using an analogy of a sculptor who enjoys sculpting something up from scratch rather than wanting an immediate finished product. But surely the sculptor will be most frustrated if he can't see what he is making or how it is getting on, or what modifications he needs to make etc?

Be really great if you could clear this up for me. Thank you!

Hi Sati,
Not looking for results doesn't mean that the results won't come. Your looking for progress is not what makes progress happen.

The thing that is screwy as Abe would say is that when you look for progress your perspective depends on where you are on the emotional scale. If you are high on the emotional scale then looking for results is a good thing. However, when you are below the worry line looking for results creates more problems. So unless you are someone who is really good at telling where they are on the emotional scale - don't look for results. Just appreciate where you are and let the universe surprise and delight you.

If you are learning a new skill have fun with it - don't beat up on yourself if you are not making progress - trust that the progress will come, and only practice as much as is enjoyable. You can always find a place that feels better - practicing law of attraction is all about your self talk.

Thank you Zehra.

Since I made that comment, I learned a lot more about Abraham's teachings and now I understand. I can see now that the 'sculpting' happens emotionally, and the fun is in aligning myself to my goal and then following impulses from Source that gets me closer and closer - almost like a treaure hunt!. I see now that outer manifestations are but happy side-effects of this fun journey.

I really appreciate your website btw, because seeing your confidence in Abraham's teachings and reading about how you applied that to turn around your own life was what made me finally decide to approaching these teachings from a place of trust - which is of course, when everything started making sense. Thank you!
